This is (primarily) why I started my Substack! To use it as a podcast platform. I never in a million years thought of having a podcast. My husband has a soccer ⚽️ Podcast he's been doing for YEARS. I don't know why I decided to suddenly do a podcast based on my Medium articles... but here we are and I am now up to episode 10 of my weekly Pod. So still very new and learning the ropes (also as an introvert that talks too fast!). But I'm slowly getting the hang of it and enjoying it!
Ugh, I HATE podcasts. They bore me. I am not a good speaker. I am a writer — those are two very different things.
And I have a whole professional recording studio in my attic and am married to a recording engineer!
We recorded me reading one of my substack posts — once. I was even worse than I thought I’d be. Didn’t matter — nobody listened to it, although I have quite decent readership. I think the world wants me to stick to writing.
I’ve actually been doing 2 daily audio broadcasts for years - one of them for 10 years. Also, the middle section of my book is on audio because it is for non native speakers to understand the pronunciation patterns in English. Hence my goal to create a podcast would seem to not be such a big step. But.......
I’ve been ready for a while but wasn’t sure if Substack is the right platform. Are you publishing to other podcast locations as well? (Spotify, Apple Podcasts, etc.) Any pros or cons of using Substack? I had planned to use Zoom for guests and convert the audio file to audacity and then upload to the various sites but if Substack handles some of that for you, maybe it’s better. Clearly I need to do more research. Thanks for the nudge!!
This is awesome advice—thank you! A couple of us on the OBA team have run podcasts before, but you and some other amazing Substackers have inspired us to re-launch our podcast. We’re going to be talking about stories in art we’ve watched, read, or listened to that we loved, and lessons learned from them!
I started a podcast with my artist friend, Roberto Viacava, called the Instant Ink Comic Book Podcast and we've already had so many amazing comic writers and artists on. We've met so many great people.
I also record my Substack as a podcast - and I'm so tempted to do even more as I'm having such a good time doing it.
I had a podcast on my previous pub, Storyslinger. Now that I’ve consolidated to one pub, it’s time to revisit podcasting.
As a note, another way to monetize a podcast on Substack is to paywall the transcript, show notes, and comments while leaving the audio free.

Well done!

Ha ha, we all have different strengths. Well done for not thinking “Oh I ‘should’ be doing that, even though I hate it.”

Podcasting as a writer is so powerful. It connects you deeper to your reader.
I've done over 300 podcast Episodes. My new Mini Book Publishing Podcast coming soon!
Thanks for this, it really has inspired to start my own (I had hushed that dream two years ago)
But this makes not want to abandon it.
Amateur question... Where did you start your podcast on?
Substack? Spotify? Youtube or?

Congrats David, for overcoming your fears, and thanks for sharing what you've learned!

My biggest problem is trying to reign myself in!

Such a great post- as someone who launched their Substack TODAY with a podcast coming this is great and much needed!
When I first tested Podcast on here earlier this year. It did not work.
But then I gave it another shot past two months, they went so much better!🤯 Not sure what happen there 🤣
Well, for me, a podcast is definitely something I want to do. Slowly working towards it. Thanks David for being a humble Sherpa for the rest of us.
