The consistency thing is huge. And like you did, I think looking at your average is much more useful as an overall strategy than being robotic everyday. I find it helps with compliance.

Damn that’s a hell of a lot of time reading. I’m sure it pays dividends with your writing too.

It actually takes quite a while to select articles you are truly interested in, to read properly and write thoughtful comments. Let alone the writing! I am quite slow, but I try to stay consistent and focus on quality.

I have also seen that helps with Substack, the valuable engagement seems to be helpful. Aside from the absence of spikes, it seems that the average views and reads numbers in March did not change much compared to November, yet the earnings are a lot higher.. why is that? I have never used Medium (yet) so I am trying to understand. Thank you !!

I did a couple of 30 day experiments on Medium last year. I made a few bucks here and there. Next month I plan to do it again. I see things being better since I have more subscribers and the fact that more people are paying attention to my content.

I completely agree, consistent is key! It’s so simple yet it can be very challenging to sustain a consistent approach to posting. Thank you for sharing :)

I got so frustrated with Medium that I quit after a while -- now I see what I did wrong and I will try to implement your experiences in Substack -- thanks for this

Very interesting to see the algorithm "appreciating" you participating. How do you go on when it gets to holiday time? Obviously a bank of posts can still be posted but what about the interaction side of things? Carry on? Take a break and risk the algorithm liking you a little less?

Great write up David. Yes consistency works wonders, but I like that you highlighted sustainability as well. Its crucial that as writers we don't put pressure in ourselves to bite more than we can chew.

Be curious about how much garbage you ran into and how much sifting you had to do to leave meaningful comments. ;)

I've tried some similar experiments on Medium and came to the conclusion it wasn't worth the time. Yes, it satisfied some ego metrics in gaining 'followers' and 'views' but the ROI simply didn't add up - and when carried on for too long, becomes unsustainable.

A middle-road approach has led to much more contentment with these digital writing business gigs. However, that's just my experience - there's so many ways to go about this stuff.

Do you post the same articles on both sites or tailor different ones for each?

I had the same question.

Thanks for this, David. Though it's starting to sound like you are out to promote Medium.

This is so inspiring. I've had a great month on Medium so far, with a similar but much less prolific schedule. Looking ahead on my calendar to see when I have a month where I have a good chance of emulating this so I can see what happens!

Thanks David for an insightful post . It really helps me to understand the economics behind consistent publishing. Can you guide me as i just started my writing from India on medium and Substack . For a beginner like me what could be the best way to start . Thank-you once again

They do say consistency is key. The one thing I find is that I have to choose what consistency means for me. Coming from a strategy of attempting (and “failing”) to grow my social media audience, I realized posting daily for me dilutes my work and message. I think there has to be a balance between quality and quantity - which will be different for everyone.

Right now I’ve got a format on substack that results in a weekly post on Monday with other articles sprinkled in. I may increase to a Q&A for paid subscribers once a month, I’m also doing a monthly listening circle which I’m super excited about.
