I rarely find myself sitting in traffic anymore.
I’ve worked from home, for myself, since 2018. I literally drive to about three other locations on a weekly basis, and one of those is the local shop (because we’re always out of milk).
So on the few occasions I do find myself sandwiched between other vehicles lined up at the traffic lights, it gives me a chance to read business names and taglines printed on the back of vans and lorries.
And very often, I end up thinking one thing in particular: I’m really not 100% sure what those guys actually do.
Has that ever happened to you?
Have you ever watched a TV commercial or glanced at a billboard or picked up a business card and come away none-the-wiser as to what you’ll get from that company, if you choose to spend money with them?
Brand clarity, you see, is crucial.
And that goes for writers, too.
Why does clarity matter so much for a writer brand?
Writer brands should be clear, to-the-point, and completely unambiguous. Without clarity, readers simply don’t know how to place you.
They may enjoy one piece of your writing (a book, an article, even a Substack Note) but have no idea what to expect from your next one.
If they can’t explain to a friend who you are or why they should follow you, that’s a major red flag.
Clarity is what makes your work memorable. It gives people the confidence to keep reading, to subscribe to your publication, to buy your book, and to tell others about you.
Without it, even the best writing can slip away unnoticed, like a local plumbing company that hasn't really thought through their slogan We’re Number One in the Number Two Business.
Find the thread
Clarity doesn’t mean boxing yourself in. It doesn’t mean choosing one topic or niche and ignoring everything else you want to write about.
It means finding the through-line that ties your work together. The theme or perspective that connects your Substack posts, your books, your coaching, your social presence.
Once you see that thread, everything changes. You know how to introduce yourself. You know what to say in your bio. You know what to put in your welcome email.
And most importantly, your readers know exactly why they’re here, and why they should stay.
How to understand clarity
Think about clarity as three layers:
1. Who you serve
Who do you most want reading your work?
Be specific: “anyone who loves stories” is too broad. Is it new parents? Retired professionals? People in tech?
2. What you promise
What do readers get when they stick with you?
Is it insight, entertainment, encouragement, expertise, or something else?
3. How you sound
Your voice ties it all together.
A clear brand is recognisable because the way you write feels consistent, even when topics shift. Readers can spot the nuances of your writing style, no matter what you’re writing about.
They start to hear the words read in your voice.
When these three layers line up, readers don’t hesitate. They know who you are, what you stand for, and why they want to be part of your world.
The clarity-community connection
Clarity is hard to achieve in isolation. You can’t always see what’s obvious to others.
That’s why community is essential. When you test your brand statement, tagline, or audience promise in a trusted group, you get feedback that sharpens your message. You hear what sticks. You learn what others instantly understand, and what confuses them.
Writers who work on their brand inside a community don’t just find clarity faster. They also build confidence, because they’ve seen their words resonate with real people before sending them into the world.
Clear eyes, full hearts…
Once you understand the role of clarity, everything else becomes easier.
You stop second-guessing and rewriting every sentence of your bio. You don’t waste time wondering if you should write to one audience today and a different one tomorrow.
Clarity gives you focus. It helps you grow an audience that knows exactly why they’re following you. It’s the foundation for trust, for community, and eventually, for income.

I've always been a big fan of radical clarity to cut through the confusion. Thank you for this.
I love the fact this set out 3 very simple to understand questions about being clear and concise when developing your Writers Brand. And it's given me something to work with that I will admit I need before I set up and launch the Social Media platforms for my Author Brand.
